OUR STORY

What Is Flax Linen?

Flax linen is one of the world’s oldest and most sustainable natural fibres, derived from the flax plant. Grown mostly in Europe, flax requires significantly less water and pesticides than cotton, and the entire plant can be used, making it a zero-waste crop.

Linen is known for its breathable, antibacterial, and thermoregulating properties, which help you stay cool in summer and cosy in winter. Unlike synthetic blends or heavily processed fabrics, linen becomes softer with every wash and only gets better with age.

At Malua, we use only 100% French flax - a fibre known globally for its strength, softness, and integrity. But it’s not just about the raw material - it’s what we do with it.

Unlike many brands that cut from pre-softened bolts of fabric, we sew each piece first, then stonewash it as a finished product. This ensures a relaxed texture and lived-in softness that feels perfect from the very first night. No stiffness. No breaking in.

Our linen is hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and naturally kind to your skin. It’s breathable, low-maintenance, and made to last - exactly what modern rest should feel like.

Our bedding is proudly made in the north of Portugal, a region long celebrated for its exceptional textile craftsmanship. Here, experienced artisans work in family-run ateliers where linen-making is not just a job - it’s a tradition passed through generations.

By producing in Portugal, we stay close to the source, ensuring ethical working conditions, fair wages, and meticulous quality control.

The flax linen fabric we use is sourced from mills that meet the highest European standards. Our fabric carries both the European Flax™ and Masters of Linen™ certifications - marks of quality, sustainability, and responsible production.

  • Masters of Linen™ guarantees that the fibre is entirely processed and woven in Europe, with full traceability from field to finish.

    It all begins in the flax fields of Western France, where nutrient-rich soil and a gentle climate yield some of the world’s finest natural fibres. No irrigation. No GMOs. Just nature doing what it does best.

  • Woven in Portugal

    Once harvested, the raw flax is shipped to northern Portugal. Home to generations of textile craftsmanship. There, it’s transformed into linen fabric in reputable, ethically run mills, where tradition meets precision.

  • Stored in Poland

    Finished products are warehoused in the heart of Poland, allowing us to dispatch quickly across Europe with minimal environmental impact. Small-batch production ensures fresh, seasonally aligned stock, not mass-produced surplus.

  • Delivered to You
